Framework layer Cognitive Architecture of SEO
Mentions depend on three things the content team controls and that usually have no owner.
Brand mentions in generated answers look random when observed from the outside. Up close, they respond to factors that can be worked on, and three of them hold most of the gain.
Disclosure: I am a Semrush Ambassador, and Brand Performance and Competitor Research are Semrush features. The three adjustments described here do not depend on any tool. The tool shows up in the measurement part, and the passage that describes the product is marked with its source and the date it was checked.
The condition that cancels all three adjustments when it fails
Before the adjustments there is an entry condition: the page has to be accessible to the crawler of the system you want to reach. A robots.txt block, an edge firewall block and content that only appears after JavaScript runs take the page out of the candidate set before any decision about the text. Checking takes a few minutes and saves eight weeks of work that could never have had an effect.
Adjustment 1. Name the brand instead of referring to it
Well-written texts avoid repetition, swapping the name for a pronoun or a generic expression. When a passage is retrieved on its own, that elegance turns into ambiguity, because the subject stayed in the previous paragraph.
The mechanism lies in how text gets retrieved. The page is sliced into chunks, and each chunk is indexed as an independent unit. A pronoun whose antecedent stayed in the previous chunk loses its referent at retrieval time, and the passage ends up talking about a company without saying which one. Between two equivalent passages, a system that needs to name a brand in its answer tends to pick the one where the brand is named.
The fix is simple and uncomfortable for editors: repeat the name of the brand or entity at the start of every section that might be read on its own. The adjustment applies per reading unit. Repeating the name in every sentence makes the text worse without improving retrieval.
In practice, a reading unit is the section under an H2, a long list item, an image caption, a table header row and a callout block. In each of them, the full name appears at first mention, and later mentions can go back to pronouns.
The cost is stylistic. The text gets more repetitive than traditional editing accepts, and the reviewer will flag it as an error, with the confidence of someone who never had to be retrieved by a vector index. It is worth writing the rule into the style guide, capped at one occurrence per unit, so the repetition is treated as a documented editorial decision.
The test is quick. Copy a single section, paste it into a blank document and read it. If it does not say who it is talking about, the adjustment has not been applied there yet.
Adjustment 2. Provide the data that does not exist yet
A system trained on published text reproduces what is already circulating. What makes a source get chosen is having what the others lack: a measured number, a procedure described precisely, a case with context.
Content that only reshuffles the consensus competes with everyone else doing the same, and the odds of being chosen get diluted. The conditions that come before this differentiator, retrieval and attribution, are laid out in the path to becoming an AI reference source.
Four formats tend to work, in increasing order of cost:
- A measured number, with sample, period and method declared on the same page.
- A procedure described in reproducible steps, including the conditions under which it fails.
- A dated case, with context, constraints and outcome, including what was left out of scope.
- A negative result, the kind almost nobody publishes because it makes no headline, and which therefore has no competition.
There is a built-in cost and a trap. The cost is that original material takes more time per piece, which lowers volume within the same budget. The trap is that new data is born without corroboration, and corroboration weighs on source selection. The way out is to publish the method alongside the number, on its own citable page, and repeat the data in your own channels with the same wording, so the occurrences stay consistent with each other while external sources do not exist yet.
There is also the chance that the data gets absorbed without credit. That risk drops when brand and method are named in the same sentence as the number.
Adjustment 3. Exist outside your own domain
The mechanism here is independence. Your own site describes your brand, and a description from an interested party weighs less as evidence than the same description coming from someone with no stake in the sale. A brand described in the same terms by a trade publication, by third-party documentation and by a community piles up three independent confirmations.
Mentions are usually sustained by sources that describe the brand, and most of them live outside the site. Community participation, presence in industry outlets, co-authored material and up-to-date profiles are the work that sustains the description. The consistency of that description across sources is the content signal I optimize for AI search.
The fronts that usually pay off, in order of effort: profiles and listings in public industry databases, which need filling in and periodic updates; participation in communities where the topic is already being discussed; material co-authored with people who are already cited in the space; and coverage in trade outlets, which is the slowest and the hardest to control.
The counterpoint is that this front depends on third parties and responds in months. It carries the symmetric risk: a negative or outdated external mention is also a source, and it circulates too.
How to measure whether the three adjustments worked
The three adjustments compete with each other for the team’s time, which justifies measuring them separately instead of applying all of them at once and crediting the result to the bundle. To know which page and which passage sustained each mention, the log follows the Citation Lab.
The minimum design has four elements:
- One set of pages per adjustment, with similar volume and maturity across the sets.
- A baseline of mentions collected before any change, with the same set of questions that will be used afterwards.
- An eight-week window without touching any other variable on those pages.
- A log of what changed on the systems’ side during the period, because a model update contaminates the reading and has to be part of the interpretation.
The reading has to be declared as indicative. Eight weeks on one set of pages do not support a causal claim, and they do support a decision about where to put the next quarter’s effort.
